David vs Goliath

Tiger Woods Knee Pain

I imagine the conversation went something like this as Tiger called Elin, his supermodel wife.

“Honey, I’m in a playoff tomorrow with Rocco. “Who?” ya know Rocco Mediate. Ive never heard of him but please be home by dinner .

When Tiger Woods goes up against the field there is usually one who hangs in there till the end. The legend was of course started when woods came back to beat Steve Scott to claim his 3rd straight U.S am, followed by Bob May, and countless others.

This one however, was different. Nobody expected a hobbled David to win this one.

Tiger has been a consistent even money choice against the field his entire pro career. At 5/1 David was a longshot. The only reason he wasn’t 100/1 was the stupidity of the public who actually thought David could walk on a golf course for the 1st time in months and win the most treacherous event of all.

I am the degenerate sports gambler. I always have “action” Usually I bet the underdog , but I always bet. My choice for the 08 Open championship didn’t make the cut. Although my rooting interest may have been thwarted, this tournament reminded me that I actually do LOVE sports.

Top 5 sports moments of 2008

Big Brown Running

I have always been intrigued by “Best of” sports lists. Not only do they spark debate, but as a sports fan I enjoy the “Memorable” events.

As 2008 nears its half-way point I have compiled a list of the most memorable moments so far in 2008. I encourage anyone who disagrees to post a comment with your opinion.

1. New York Giants.. This is easy. the hated patriots were 18-0 and every pundit in america predicted Tom Brady and Co to easily win their 4th super bowl. A win would have catapulted this team to “The greatest team in the history of the N.F.L.  We all know the 1972 dolphins were the only team to go through an entire season undefeated, there mark of 17-0 is regarded as the greatest accomplishment in the history of sports. A New England victory seemed certain, and with the 24 hr ESPN coverage along with other factors the 2007 Patriots would have easily replaced the Dolphins as the “Greatest” team ever. David Tyree made a catch in the Super Bowl that defied logic. The Giants upset was special and is easily the best moment so far of 2008.

2. Big Brown…Just when we thought horse racing was dead this 3 year old male rolled through the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and looked unstoppable. At the Belmont this horse was a 1-5 favorite to become the first triple crown winner in decades. There had not been this much buzz since Secretariat in 1972. Although there have been numerous horses to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown in recent years, no horse appeared to be as unstoppable as Big Brown. But as my favorite ESPN announcer Chris Berman once said, “Games are not played on paper”. Of course Big Brown finished dead last and now will probably retire to stud and lead a life most men could only dream of.

3. NBA FINALS… The only reason this is not higher on the list is that the games were pretty boring. That did not take away the excitement of these rivals back in the finals for the first time in 22 years. Lets hope these marquee franchises stay on top for the next decade

4. Tiger…Ho hum Tiger Woods won his 14th major. Hopefully you spent fathers day watching this incredible athlete on a bum knee making amazing shots, only to whince in pain often. Rocco Mediate did everything he could to dethrone “The Man” but as usual, Woods came out on top.

5. I would have to say that when Joel Russakov was invited to the ESPNZONE for a sports spelling Bee, he was a heavy underdog. When he correctly spelled Angel catcher Mike Napoli to win the first ever Sports Spelling Bee it was an incredible moment. If for ANY reason you missed this incredible moment I invite you to go to YOU-TUBE and view this amazing feat.

Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Top Defender?

Soccer Goalie

Believe it or not, the ability to become a much better defender is like a simple process that can be improved with the more experience you gain as a soccer player and the number of games that you actively play and don’t just sit on the bench. The desire to become a better player in any type of position can be met by watching all of the best soccer players around the world that share the same position as you.

When you are shadowing a player, be sure that you are aware of his positioning, how close the player is marking his opponent, and his awareness. It is very important that you take the time to watch the players very carefully and then try to mimic or act out the way that the soccer player is performing, by doing this you are going to be able to speed up your actual understanding of soccer, and as a result you will become a much better player.

Looking at each modern defender, you can see that each of them has to be very athletic, by having very good results on your vertical jump, good results from your twenty meter sprint and being dominant physically. All of these attributes are much easier to train but they take a lot of dedication and hard work.

The absolute best way to improve your athleticism is by bounding lunges or plyometrics. When you take the time to apply yourself to these exercises, you can improve the power that you body is capable of generating, which results in you being a very good athlete. Your soccer training can help to improve both your lateral movement and acceleration. It is extremely important that all of the defenders that are athletes nowadays is able to keep up with all of the lightning quick strikers of this modern soccer game.

Within the aerial battles, the defenders always should be dominant. When you are able to win some of the aerial contests, it will five your team even more of an edge, in the event that you are dominant in the air, this is just one less option that the opposition is going to have in order to attack your team.

One of the key advantages that a defender has over the striker is that the defender is going to have to try to win the ball and knock the ball away from danger, while at the same time; the striker is going to try to maintain possession and pass to one of his other teammates or potentially score. When you are challenging for the ball as a defender, it is very important that you use your body in the air because this can be the complete difference between wining the header and losing the header.

Even though there are several skills that defenders have to learn and be able to maintain during their soccer training, it is going to generally boil down to how hard you are actually willing to work and on what sacrifices you are more than willing to make.

Good Football Equipment is important

As we all already know, for many players out there, football is their favorite past time. Football players enjoy the thrill that a game of football has to offer and they also find it very fun to compete against all of the other leagues. It doesn’t matter whether you are playing the role of the football the coach or the player of the football team, there is a lot of gear that you are going to need to purchase in order for you to be able to improve your overall game and make your football team look official. Within the football player’s life, football equipment is considered to be an essential aspect. Having said that, it is very important that you take the time to select the equipment for football that is going to best fit your standing within the game. When it comes to choosing the gear that is appropriate for football, there are several steps that you are going to need to follow carefully in order to make absolutely sure that you have the ideal fit that is going to protect you and that is going to make you feel more comfortable throughout the entire game.

The very first thing that you should consider is a helmet. When selecting a helmet, you are going to need to select one that is just the right size to comfortably fit your head, so that it will fit perfectly and won’t fall. Some of the helmets that are available have some inflatable interior pads that are created in order to accommodate all of the different sizes of the head.

The very next step that you are going to take is to choose the appropriate face mask. You are going to recognize if the face mask actually is appropriate in the event that it fits your position very well. It is highly recommended to use face masks that have several bars in order for the players on the line to have the maximum level of protection that is available. The wide receivers, running backs, kickers and quarterbacks should only use the face masks that have a fewer number of bars so that they have the maximum visibility.

Make sure that you select jaw pads along with a chin strap that would better fit the actual size of the football helmet. In order to protect your dentals, you may also like to purchase a mouth protector made out of rubber, this will prevent your teeth from breaking during a strenuous game. When you are purchasing pads for your shoulder, you are going to need to ask your football coach or some other sporting expert which particular types of shoulder pads is going to be ideal for your position. On the other hand, when it comes down to purchasing thigh pads, hip pads, and knee pads as well as tailbone pads, you are going to have to always be able to make a selection that fits correctly, for a perfect fit the pads must be big enough to offer you comfort but they must be tight enough to offer you protection.
